TV Licensing is running an information campaign in the East Midlands to raise awareness in all communities in the area of the need for a TV licence. The campaign - during which TV Licensing will contact a number of local organisations ranging from businesses and councils through to libraries and community groups - highlights TV Licensing’s range of multi-lingual leaflets, the languages information is available in online and the telephone translation service.
TV Licensing wants to help everyone to understand the law - if people are caught watching TV without being correctly licensed they risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 – and how they can pay for a licence.
Leaflets are available in 18 different languages, and there are 16 different language pages on the website at www.tvlicensing.co.uk including French, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Greek, Gujurati, Hindi, Punjabi, Somali, Turkish, Welsh and Urdu.
TV Licensing also offers a translation service over the phone for anyone calling who does not have English as a first language. The service means that people can buy their licence, or ask for further information in over 180 languages including Gujurati, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali and Urdu, with an interpreter available within 60 seconds of the call being answered. If people have any questions about TV Licensing and would like to speak to someone in their own language, they should call 0300 790 6044.
There are many ways to pay for a TV Licence including direct debit, credit or debit card over the telephone, online at www.tvlicensing.co.uk, at PayPoint outlets or by post. It is also possible to spread the cost of a TV Licence (currently £145.50 for a colour licence) by signing up for a TV Licensing payment card.
How the translation service works
- The caller explains to the TV Licensing adviser that they require an interpreter and tells them the language they speak. The word 'interpreter' is universal and will be understood by the adviser immediately.
- The TV Licensing adviser contacts the interpreting service, and then sets up a three-way conversation with the relevant interpreter, the adviser and the caller.
- People wishing to use the translation service can do so by calling TV Licensing on 0300 790 6044.
